Supplying Essentials for Community-Based Organizations

What does the word “needs” mean to you? Some people will associate needs with a desire to feel that summer grass beneath their toes, others will think of that vacation they need to go on using that hard-earned cash they saved. But for SEFCU, and the generosity of our members and employees participating in Giving for Good, evaluating needs in our community gives SEFCU an opportunity to provide essential items to organizations serving some of our most vulnerable neighbors.

Piles of t-shirts for donation

For the second year, SEFCU conducted a summer needs assessment survey asking organizations in the Capital Region, Southern Tier, Syracuse, and Western NY what types of items and supplies they needed to better serve their clients.  And as expected, the needs were extensive – and thanks to our members and staff, Giving for Good dollars were there to help!

Michael Greenberg, a SEFCU staff member who participates in Giving for Good had this to say about the program. "I’m so grateful that SEFCU has kept me and my family safe and financially sound throughout these uncertain times, the least I feel like I can do in return is give back through a small donation to pay it forward. A little goes a long way and it's the best part of the program that just a little contribution from us as employees and members goes a long way to people who need that help the most."

The Summer Needs Assessment project provided support to 12 organizations throughout our service areas (see the list below) and proof that members who participate in Giving for Good can provide hope when people need it the most. Just read what some of our recipients had to say:

Andrew Barnes at Joseph House & Shelter wrote, “Thank you so much for the recent gift boxes of personal care items!”

Jessica Stanis from the Binghamton Rescue Mission said, "Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, staff and clients have been cleaning around the clock at our Binghamton facility. Most of the clients we serve have preexisting conditions which puts them at high risk for severe illness. We understand that it can be challenging to find certain cleaning products, but can appreciate SEFCU’s assistance with Lysol wipes, Clorox disinfectant/cleaning sprays, and hand sanitizer.”

Our 2020 Summer Essentials Program provided more than just the essentials, it provided hop to organizations and the individuals they serve. Below is a list of all the organizations that benefited from these donations.
