Kyla Schmidt, Why I Care Member Recipient

As a young woman facing an unplanned pregnancy, Kyla Schmidt knew the challenges of navigating community resources in order to provide for herself and her newborn son. Years later, the idea of establishing a non-profit to support parents in need was born, and Mom Starts Here was established with founding Board Member Maureen Nicholson whom we met on the opposite page.

Kyla realized as they began making plans for the new organization that her journey could be useful to not only provide young mothers what they need in terms of supplies, but her story could also be a testimonial and success story
to give hope and inspiration to others.

Kyla was so committed to the mission of Mom Starts Here, and for about a year after it was established she held a full time job at SEFCU and managed the non-profit on a voluntary basis in her free time. Now she serves as the Executive Director and she said her experiences have helped guide her decisions. She said seeing how she has been instrumental in alleviating stress and empowering women has been a powerful experience for her and she looks forward to growing Mom Starts Here to serve even more people and deepen the impact of those families she’s already assisted.
In addition to her work with Mom Starts Here she also volunteers for Fostering Futures, American Cancer Society, and Life Church.
