Maureen Nicholson, Why I Care Employee Recipient

Maureen Nicholson and Kyla Schmidt (a former SEFCU employee in her own right), saw a need to help expecting moms and served as a founding board member for a non-profit to support these women. Mom Starts Here assists soon-to-be moms by providing baby supplies and offering parenting classes and helps strengthen vulnerable families while working to break the cycle of poverty.

In just five short years, Mom Starts Here has made an impact in the lives of many, but Maureen recalls her favorite memory of the first Mom Starts Here Community Baby Shower. Each guest at the shower received complimentary raffle tickets and one of the prizes was a toddler bed. One of the children attending the shower read the number and his own mom jumped up because she held the winning number. The youngster was so excited and said, “I finally have my own bed.” Maureen said the thought of how she made a difference in that family’s life is what still motivates her.

Maureen’s philanthropic roots come from her upbringing in a large family with five brothers and sisters who were raised to serve. Her family philosophy was “slice the meat a little thinner and add another potato to the soup” with the goal of making sure not only their family was taken care of, but neighbors too.

In addition to the time she gives to Mom Starts Here, Maureen volunteers for All Saints Catholic Academy and for Westland Hills Cal Ripken Little League.
