Background: Target security breach

On December 19 Target announced that information from more than 40 million debit and credit cards has been compromised as part of a security breach. Target said that criminals gained access to customer information on November 27 and maintained access through December 15.

As part of the security breach, fraudsters obtained customer names, credit and debit card numbers, expiration dates, and the three-digit security codes for individuals who shopped at its stores. Target said that online customers were not affected.

Protecting yourself

If you shopped at Target during the dates mentioned above, it is important that you closely watch your account(s) for unauthorized purchases. SEFCU offers a number of convenient products and services you can use to keep an eye on your account.

E-mail & SMS (text) alerts
Enroll in e-mail and SMS alerts and receive e-mail or SMS notification when your balance falls below or goes above a certain level. E-mail alerts can be set up by logging into your SEFCU OnLine account, clicking on the “Additional Services” tab, and selecting “Mobile Banking Alerts.”

Visa® alerts
Sign up to receive alerts when transactions post to your account over a certain amount or when your balance reaches a certain limit. Sign up to have e-mail and/or text message alerts delivered to you with the most current information possible. Account alerts notify you of important account activity, such as low balance or when a payment is due. To get started, log in to your SEFCU OnLine account and select "Visa Credit Card" from the "Additional Services" drop-down menu. Next, choose "Alerts" and "Custom Alerts."
