Before becoming president and CEO of the Food Bank of Western New York, Marylou Borowiak served on its Board of Directors for 12 years, and is proud to be the only female executive director to have led the Food Bank.
She remembers the very first time she volunteered at the Food Bank’s Food 2 Families fundraiser and was touched to see the community come together to help families in need, being especially inspired by the people who once relied on the Food Bank for support making generous donations.
It was after Marylou graduated from college that she made the commitment to give back and change the lives of others, first volunteering at her company-sponsored events, and eventually joining several Boards of Directors where she could make an impact. Her contributions can be felt throughout Western New York, giving her time to Susan G. Komen Western New York, Southtowns Walleye Association, and Hillside Scholarship Connection, to name a few. Marylou was once given the advice to surround herself with people who shared similar interests and that really resonated with her. She realized that if she surrounded herself with community-minded individuals who had the same beliefs she could make a more positive impact in her work and volunteer efforts – and this mantra has forever changed her life – and her outlook.
