Heather Miller, Why I Care Employee Recipient

Several years ago Heather had the opportunity to ride the Marine Corps Toys for Tots train which makes stops throughout New York State, distributing coats, hats, blankets, and toys to recipients along the way. She remembers children bypassing toys and asking for gloves and coats. It was then that she realized the impact she was having and gave perspective to what having a “bad day” really means.

Heather said there isn’t a pivotal moment or “reason” why she started volunteering. She just believes it is her calling and the right thing to do. She considers herself fortunate to have always had food on the table and not to have been affected by a significant medical condition or incurable disease.

Heather is extremely committed to giving her time to community organizations. In 2016 alone she volunteered more than 130 hours, contributing large amounts of time to the American Cancer Society, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, and many others. In addition, Heather is also on the SEFCU Foundation Board.

Heather often jokes that “she volunteers for selfish reasons” because she feels fulfilled each time she gives her time, but in our book Heather is anything but selfish.
