Carrie Farley wears a badge of honor that she never asked for and certainly didn’t want. She is a member of American Gold Star Mothers, an organization that supports mothers who have lost a son or daughter while serving our country. After losing her son, SSG Derek Farley, in August 2010 she felt lost and didn’t know where to turn until learning about American Gold Star Mothers and meeting a mom who had lost her son in Vietnam.
Since becoming a member of American Gold Star Mothers, Carrie not only learned how to grieve the loss of her son, but has become a source of strength for moms also coping with the loss of a child. She is also an advocate for veterans returning home after their service and worked on a collaborative project to open a Veterans Study Room at Hudson Valley Community College. She interacts with these soldiers regularly and many even refer to her as “Ma.”
In addition to her time as an American Gold Star Mother, she is currently president for the Department of New York, American Gold Star Mothers. When her children were young, she also volunteered her time as treasurer for the Parent Teacher Organization at Donald P. Sutherland Elementary School and treasurer for Nassau Baseball League.
