On June 8, National Best Friend Day, SEFCU volunteers assembled and delivered 225 care kits to support the programs of Unity House Domestic Violence Services.

Unity House operates the only licensed Domestic Violence Shelter in Rensselaer County and is available to survivors of domestic violence and their children who no longer have a safe place to stay. Thanks to donations made through Giving for Good, 150 care kits packed full of supplies for adult women visiting the shelter and another 75 designed for toddler-aged children were created.

With the help of Compassion Coalition and Beekman 1802, the effort exploded to six GIANT pallets of supplies – socks, t-shirts, bras, assorted clothing, hair dryers, hairbrushes and hair accessories, jewelry, footwear, pillowcases, cosmetics and toiletries, child activity booklets, games, toys, school/craft supplies, and more!

Supplies that didn’t go in the care kits were sorted and packaged for deliveries to Unity House, but also the YWCA-Greater Capital Region, IPH, the City Mission of Schenectady, and others!

“What a team effort!” said SEFCU Foundation Board Member Samoria Zurlo. “Each delivery was met with smiling faces and the organizations were thrilled to receive donations of these essential supplies and loved that we mixed in some special items to pamper and ‘treat yourself.’ This was a wonderful, impactful project and I am always amazed what we can accomplish when we work together.”
