Benita Zahn, Why I Care Member Recipient

Benita Zahn is a familiar face for many Capital Region residents as an evening anchor and health reporter for WNYT, but the work she does behind the scenes is just as important as what she does on camera. She remembers one interview in which she spoke to a woman battling ovarian cancer and realized how little women knew about the disease. Since then the two women have not only developed a strong friendship but work together to raise money and awareness about the disease by supporting a yearly race organized by the non-profit Caring Together. What started with a hundred or so participants has evolved over the years and is now closing in on one thousand runners and countless walkers.

In addition to the work Benita does for Caring Together she also volunteers her time for a number of other organizations including Kelly’s Angels, Building on Love, Ronald McDonald House, Go Red for Women, and Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, among others. She believes it’s important to answer the call to help when someone reaches out to her for support and that if we work together to help those in need we all become stronger.

Benita is thrilled to continue to support community organizations knowing that the time she’s given helped raise funds as well as the profile of the organization – or even more simply that she has been able to let someone know how much they are valued.
