Anthony Mayers, Why I Care Member Recipient

Anthony Mayers, Member Recipient

In 2011 Anthony Mayers came to the City Mission of Schenectady with plans to stay for a 30-day visit, but what happened was so much more. He was struggling with life and needed some help, love, and guidance. He received all of that, and has been giving it back to others for nearly a decade.

In the past nine years, Anthony has worked hard to improve his reading and writing skills, and meets weekly with a tutor he now calls a friend. But, what he started to realize is that he could be an example to others on how to turn your life around and make a difference in others’ lives as well. He recalls meeting a man after he arrived at the City Mission of Schenectady who was once a resident there, but had gone on to become a mental health counselor. The man told him he was going to make it and Anthony believed him. This is the message Anthony now emphatically shares with all the men who arrive at the mission.

Anthony has used his experiences to make a difference in others’ lives. He remembers when he was a child and he had to put cardboard in his shoes because they didn’t fit and not always have enough clothing. He remembers how he felt – upset and mad – and doesn’t want other children to grow up this way. That’s why he connected a local elementary school to the City Mission of Schenectady’s clothing resource so children and families can get the clothing they need.
