College savings plans (also called “529 plans”) allow you to set aside money for education while reaping these benefits:

Tax-free growth. The funds you invest in a 529 plan grow tax-free. That means you pay federal taxes now but not on the withdrawals you make later - as long as you make them for “qualified education expenses,” such as tuition, room, board, supplies and equipment.

Affordability. In many states, you can start a 529 plan with as little as $25.

Flexibility. With 529 plans*, you have many choices at your disposal. For instance, you don’t have to establish your account in the state where you live. The savings you accumulate can be used at any one of hundreds of participating colleges across the nation. You can open accounts for any number of people, including yourself, regardless of age. And if your child decides not to go to school, you can designate the funds to be used for someone else’s education expenses.
